The Frenchie shares many of the traits that made its bulldog ancestors so successful in the bull-baiting arena: low center of gravity, wide body, heavy bone, muscular build and large, square head. It has soft loose skin forming wrinkles about the head and shoulders. Unlike the bulldog, it has an alert, curious expression, which is aided by its bar ears. Also, unlike the bulldog, its movement is unrestrained and free, with reach and drive. It is a hardy, entertaining home companion and a solid lap dog.

The French bulldog is a clown in a lap dog. It enjoys playing and entertaining its family, as well as cuddling and snoozing with its favorite person. It is amiable, sweet, companionable and willing to please.

French BulldogFrench BulldogThe French Bulldog is a sturdy, compact, stocky little dog, with a large square head that has a rounded forehead. The muzzle is broad and deep with a well-defined stop. The nose is black, but may be lighter in lighter colored dogs. The upper lips hang down over the lower lips. The teeth meet in an underbite and the lower jaw is square and deep. The round, prominent eyes are set wide apart and are dark in color. The bat ears stand erect, are broad at the base narrowing in a triangular shape and rounded at the tips. The height at the withers to the ground should be approximately the same as the length from withers to the base of the tail. The tail is either straight or corkscrew. The chest is broad and deep with the front of the dog being wider than the back end, forming a pear shape. The dewclaws may be removed. The medium-fine coat is short and smooth. The skin is loose, forming wrinkles around the head and shoulders. Coat colors include brindle, brindle and white, cream, cream and white, fawn, fawn and white, fawn brindle, white, white and brindle, white and fawn, black, black and fawn, black and white, fawn and black, fawn brindle and white and gray and white. It can have a black mask, brindle markings, be piebald, spotted and/or have white markings.
Temperament
The French Bulldog is a pleasant, easy-care companion who is playful, alert and affectionate. It is enthusiastic and lively, without being yappy and loud. Curious, sweet and absolutely hilarious, it has a very comical personality and loves to clown around. It is bright and easygoing. The Frenchie gets along fairly well with strangers and other animals and enjoys being with its owner. It plays well with other dogs. Those Frenchies that are allowed to believe they are alpha may become dog aggressive. This breed needs leadership and will not thrive without it. The Frenchie cannot be owned and ignored. When it senses an owner is meek or passive toward it, it will become very stubborn and even snappish. They can be trained if the owner is calm, but firm, consistent and patient. Proper human to canine communication is essential. Do not give them affection or sweet talk them if they are displaying any type of unwanted behaviors; instead correct them sternly with an air of calm authority. French Bulldogs are clean, and most will try to avoid puddles. Most cannot swim so take caution around water. This breed does best with considerate children who know how to display proper leadership. This breed may drool and slobber; however a good percentage of them do not. They are also a relentless hunter of mice. Do not allow this sweet little bully to develop Small Dog Syndrome.
Height, Weight
Height: 12 inches (30 cm)
There are two weight classes of French Bulldog: 19 - 22 pounds (9 - 10 kg) and 22 - 28 pounds (10 - 13 kg). Over 28 pounds is a disqualification.
Health Problems
French Bulldogs are prone to joint diseases, spinal disorders, heart defects and eye problems. Dams often have to deliver pups by cesarean section, because pups have relatively large heads. They often have respiratory problems. They tend to wheeze and snore and have trouble in hot weather. Prone to heatstroke. An overweight Frenchie may have trouble breathing, because of a swollen abdomen. Do not overfeed this breed. Putting them under anesthesia is risky because of their breathing issues. French Bulldogs are high maintenance and potential owners need to be aware that their vet bills may be high. Take this into consideration before choosing a Frenchie puppy.
Living Conditions
Frenchies are good for apartment life. They can be fairly active indoors and will do okay without a yard. They do not do well in temperature extremes.
Exercise
The French Bulldog needs to be taken on a daily walk, where the dog is made to heel beside or behind the person holding the lead, as instinct tells a dog the leader leads the way, and that leader needs to be the human. Simply running around a large yard is not going to satisfy their migration instinct. Take care in hot weather. They love to run and play and can play for hours if you let them. Some have higher energy levels than others. 
Life Expectancy
About 10-12 years.
Grooming
Very little grooming is needed. Regular brushings will do. This breed is an average shedder.
Origin
The French Bulldog originated in 19th Century Nottingham, England, where lace makers decided to make a smaller, miniature, lap version of the English Bulldog that was referred to as a "toy" bulldog. In the 1860s, when the Industrial Revolution drove the craftsmen to France, they took their dogs with them. The toy bulldogs became popular in France and were given the name the "French Bulldog." The breed eventually made its way back to England for dog shows. The Brits were not happy with the name "French" given to a dog that was originally from England, however the name "French Bulldog" stuck.

Veterinários preparam um programa de dieta personalizado para todos os finalistasUm gato que pesa 10,1 quilos - mais do que o dobro de seu peso ideal, de 4,5 quilos - é o finalista de um concurso de dietas junto a outros oito animais de estimação, na Grã-Bretanha. Todos os anos, a ONG de tratamento para animais PDSA realiza o concurso de emagrecimento, em que os bichos entram em dieta com assistência veterinária. O prêmio para o animal que perder mais peso é um fim de semana prolongado com seu dono, em uma casa de campo, no sul da Inglaterra. O gato Socrates, ou Socs, como é conhecido, começou a ganhar peso nos últimos dois anos, diz seu dono, Bill Duncans, depois que os dois se mudaram para uma casa com menos acesso ao exterior. Segundo os organizadores, ele é o maior gato já inscrito na competição. "O Socs adora comida e sabe quando é hora de jantar. Ele me acorda para tomar café da manhã todos os dias e vem me procurar às 17hem ponto todas as tardes, para seu jantar!", diz Duncan. "Eu não tenho dado lanchinhos para ele nos últimos dois anos, mas ele costumava implorar pelos restos, e adorava, especialmente, batatas fritas com sabor de queijo e cebola. Estou determinado a fazê-lo emagrecer." Os veterinários da ONG preparam um programa de dieta personalizado para todos os finalistas da competição. Nos últimos seis anos, a PDSA realizou exames veterinários em mais de 20 mil cães e notou um aumento de mais de 10% nos níveis de obesidade - 28% em 2008, em comparação com 17% em 2003. No ano passado, a proporção significava que mais do que um em cada quatro cachorros estavam acima do peso. Segundo a ONG, os gatos também estão ficando mais gordos e os últimos dados da PDSA indicam que um em cada quatro gatos está acima do peso. "O problema de obesidade entre bichos de estimação parece estar piorando a cada ano", diz a veterinária sênior da PDSA Elaine Pendlebury. "O excesso de comida e a falta de exercícios resultam em aumento de peso e são responsáveis pela maioria dos casos de animais gordos." Uma pesquisa recente da PDSA mostrou que entre os lanches mais comuns dados aos bichos de estimação estão carnes gordurosas, queijo, orelhas de porco, batatas fritas, biscoitos e cachorros-quentes. Chega de bafo!

Aquele cheirinho forte da boca de seu cãozinho não deve ser ignorado. O mau hálito é sinal de que há algo errado com a boca ou com o aparelho digestivo do animal.

Uma das causas do mau hálito pode ser a placa bacteriana que se acumula sobre os dentes. A placa é composta por proteínas, células mortas e de descamação, saliva, restos de alimentos e, principalmente, bactérias que, através do processo de fermentação, produzem substâncias que são responsáveis por este terrível mau cheiro.

Por terem os dentes mais juntos, os cães de pequeno porte têm mais chances de serem afetados pelo problema.

O livro do médico veterinário canadense Bruce Fogle, The Complete Dog Care Manual, reúne algumas dicas muito úteis sobre o assunto.

Preste bem atenção e não deixe mais seu amiguinho sofrer com o bafo de leão:

O tártaro e os restos de comida podem causar infecções na gengiva, ou gengivite, que muitas vezes é acompanhada por sangramentos. Neste caso, escovar os dentes do animal regularmente previne a formação do tártaro. Se o tártaro já estiver formado, o melhor é consultar um veterinário para uma raspagem.
Pode ocorrer também tumores que parecem caroços na gengiva. Então, é necessário que se avalie se o tumor é maligno ou não, devendo ser removido com cirurgia.
Em raças com boxers e bull terriers, entre outras, pode haver um crescimento proliferativo nas gengivas. Um problema hereditário que faz com que a gengivas cresçam em demasia, podendo até cobrir os dentes. Muitas vezes, só uma cirurgia pode solucionar o problema, mas antibióticos melhoram as infecções causadas pelo crescimento.
Longe de ser considerado tratamento de luxo, os cuidados bucais vêm complementar a lista de medidas preventivas para a saúde do animal, que também inclui: alimentação à base de ração de boa qualidade, vacinação completa e controle de parasitas, higiene do animal e do local onde vive, programa de exercícios, além de muito amor e carinho.

Não ache normal seu cão ter bafo. Infecções sérias, que podem comprometer toda a saúde do animal, podem ter início numa boca mal tratada. Faça a higiene diária em seu bichinho e leve seu cão periodicamente ao veterinário.
